Refinishing a Kitchenaid Mixer
Who doesn’t love a good kitchen appliance? How about a nice Kitchenaid Mixer? I LOVE my mixer and use it a few times a month — usually for baking though I would LOVE to get more attachments for it!
We were blessed to receive our mixer as a wedding present and that beautiful Robin’s Egg blue was my jam. I LOVED that color and had it accented throughout our home. I still love that color but lean more neutral. Now I know, it’s an appliance — color doesn’t matter. However I love this mixer so much I want to leave it out instead of carting it up and down out of the cabinet. With that, I went on a quest to see IF it was possible to paint it… and how to do it.
I ran across a few different posts and everyone recommended Rustoleum Appliance Epoxy. The selection of colors isn’t huge — but that wasn’t a dealbreaker for me as I only wanted white.
I started by taking off the silver details and bowl holder. They’re held on by screws and it’s easy enough to take those apart.
Next up I needed to make sure that it was thoroughly cleaned. There were a few spots that were a little grimy — I used some soap and water but I had a few spots that I couldn’t get loose. Thankfully I had some Citrus Fresh oil on hand! Citrus oils work PERFECT for removing stubborn sticky messes (even leftover sticker grime!).
After cleaning, I disassembled the medallion on the front, the silver band and taped the wire and the motor. I took some fine steel wool and gave it a quick once over — and then got to work.
The trick with any spray — including the Rustoleum Appliance Epoxy, is to go slow. Light even coats are MUCH better than going to heavy. It had a tendency to collect on the nozzle which caused drip marks so I made sure to wipe it off as I went. (I ended up stripping it once because of it and redid it — again listening to my own advice and taking it slow).
After it was thoroughly dried, I reassembled the pieces and I am SO happy with how it turned out! If you give it a go — please share!
Soon, I’ll be sharing my favorite cookie recipe — and of course this mixer comes to my aid! Hope you have a wonderful baking season! :) I mean, we have to create joy where we can (2020 amiright?!)!
