Ludwig Family Pumpkin Pie
With Thanksgiving less than a week away (seriously 2020), I’m gathering my favorite food items in preparation for a very small gathering — immediate family only. Thanks COVID.
One thing our family tradition is to make food from recipes passed down. One of my favorite ones is my Great-Grandma Dortha’s pumpkin pie. It’s very simple and easy to make. Ingredients are easily found — in part because this recipe was created during the great depression. I’ll share more of her story whenever I post my next recipe featuring another favorite of mine!
So let’s get started!
Here’s what you’ll need to make this delicious pie!
Filling:
1 can pumpkin
1 cup sugar
½ teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon cinnamon
3 eggs
1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
½ cup milk
dash of salt
Pie Crust:
Now my grandmother always uses a pre-made pie shell — but if you’re feeling like a real Betty Crocker — Joanna Gaines’s pie crust recipe is AMAZING!
Whip Cream:
Again, you can go with store bought, but this recipe is very easy and DELISH!
1 pint heavy cream
¼ cup of sugar
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Pinch of Sea Salt
Recipe Steps
Like I said — this recipe is so, so simple!
Preheat your oven to 450°F.
Mix all of them pie ingredients together and place into a pie shell or homemade pie crust.
Bake at 450°F for 10 minutes the 350°F until firm.
While the pie is baking — in a large bowl, combine the cream, sugar, vanilla and salt.
Beat with an electric mixer on high speed until fluffy.
Top the cooled pie with whip cream. Enjoy!
First up, mix the pumpkin, sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, eggs, 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice, condensed milk and salt. Next up, pour your pie filling mixture in the pre-made pie crust or your homemade one!
While your pie is baking, combine the cream, sugar, vanilla and salt and mix with an electric mixer on high speed until fluffy. When your timer is up, test the middle of the pie and make sure your toothpick comes out clean!
Yum!! Now I’m totally the type that likes a little pie with a nice dollop of whip cream.
Do you have family recipes that you cook every special dinner? Or are you creating your own new traditions?
